Chapter 23 President Honored at Seminole Powwow

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 23 President Stephen Bowers was honored Feb. 7 during the Seminole Tribal Fair and Pow Wow at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood (Florida). The annual celebration focuses on Native American art, culture, dance and tradition.

About 300 dancers and 14 drum groups competed for prize money a the event, dressed in traditional feathers, beads and ribbons.

Since serving in Vietnam, Bowers, a Native American, has worked with the tribe to form the Seminole Tribal Color Guard with Paul Bowers and Mitchell Cypress. He also serves as president of the Florida Seminole Veterans Foundation.

Bowers been at the forefront of establishing a Native American Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., a decade-old pursuit that will come to fruition on Veterans Day, when the memorial is dedicated at the National Museum of the American Indian.

“He’s one of the nicest, respectable gentleman I’ve ever met in Indian Country,” emcee Joaquin Hamilton told the audience.
