VVA's mission is to promote and support the full range of issues important to all veterans, to create a new identity for this generation of veterans, and to change public perception of Vietnam veterans.
By the late 1970s, established veterans groups had failed to prioritize issues of concern to Vietnam veterans. VVA came into existence at that time out of clear necessity to advocate for and provide support to veterans in need.
