Chapter 499 Sponsors Thanksgiving for Homeless Veterans

Through the Veterans Transition House in New Bedford, MA, Chapter 499 helped deliver meals and sent Thanksgiving Day greetings to veterans or their spouses.

The Veterans Transition House was founded by a group of Vietnam veterans and others in the community to provide support services for homeless and at-risk veterans.

When the Thanksgiving tradition started 14 years ago, the initiative reached 34 shut-in veterans. This year’s 292 recipients enjoyed a reunion-like Thanksgiving conversation over a turkey meal and pie.

The volunteers are encouraged to deliver the meals to the door and are typically invited inside for catching up and learning about their lives.

Chapter 499 along with other volunteers such as the local VFW and City of New Bedford Veterans Services sponsored the popular Thanksgiving event.
