VVA Chapter 274 received a check of $3,719 from the County Sheriff’s Department, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Army National Guard of Cheboygan County, Michigan.
For 20 years, the Sheriff’s Department has donated a check to Chapter 274, and toys to the local Salvation Army. The donation of new toys totaled approximately $4,250. The toy donations to the Salvation Army were collected at a benefit hockey game.
The local Fraternal Order of Police and the Army National Guard began donating to the Salvation Army during a benefit hockey game with the two organizations forming opposing teams. When they learned of Chapter 274’s Toys for Kids program, they expanded their hockey game’s donation collection of toys and money to benefit the both chapter and the local Salvation Army.
In addition to the monetary donation from the Sheriff’s Department, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Army National Guard, Chapter 274 also received a donation of bicycles from a motorcycle club in Cheboygan. The chapter will use the money from the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department and the bicycle donations to offer each of the 158 interested families the choice of a bike or a gift card.
Last year, 164 families expressed interest in receiving assistance from Chapter 274’s Toys for Kids program.
There is a similar Toys for Kids program by VVA Chapter 583 that targets the Alpena, Michigan community.
