More than 20 members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Texarkana Area Chapter 278 commemorated the 30th anniversary of the dedication of the city’s Korea-Vietnam Memorial on Nov. 12.
“About 28 of us worked on it, and of that number, only about five of us are still here,” chapter President Greg Beck told the Texarkana Gazette. “By the time there’s a 50th anniversary, I don’t think any of us will still be around.”
Beck said that the city began work on the memorial started in 1983, but gave the task to Chapter 278 five years later, after the project got bogged down. The memorial includes the names of 43 area veterans, including seven who served in Vietnam.
The memorial regularly hosts Memorial Day and Veterans Day celebrations, as well as POW-MIA commemorations.
