Chapter 1102 Grows Fast With Outreach

Chapter 1102 in Story County, Iowa, has grown from 25 to about 70 members in its first three years, building its community awareness and support every year with continuous outreach activities.

The chapter launched with an event that provided duffle bags filled with supplies to homeless or near-homeless veterans. A Senior Variety Show grant in the chapter’s second year allowed is to purchase more bags and supplies, and the chapter began to get donations from individuals and organizations to help with other projects.

After inviting the commandant of the Iowa Veterans Home to make a presentation, the chapter donated a major financial gift toward the purchase a bike for disabled residents to use in touring its grounds. This was made possible by a grant from the 2017 Senior Variety Show, whose theme was the 1960s and included a skit about a day in the life of an infantry squad featuring five chapter members.

Chapter members also perform outreach activities regularly at local grocery stores, as well as aboard a trailer wrapped with VVA identification in Story County parades, military events, and other public events.
