Rick Lovekin, a member of VVA Chapter 83 in New Castle County, Delaware, took part in “The Vietnam Experience,” a salute to veterans held at Wilmington University in New Castle, earlier this year. The presentation featured an appearance by journalist and author Nancy Lynch, who discussed her book, Vietnam Mailbag: Voices From the War 1968–1972, based on a newspaper column that ran in the Wilmington Morning News. Lovekin, then a helicopter door gunner and crew chief, was one of Lynch’s published letter writers, and the book offers a fresh look at first-hand accounts from combat. “Delawareans indeed spoke for all Americans through their letters, and gave those of us at home an unprecedented window on the war,” Lynch says.
