Chapter 1059’s Newman Joins Fla. Veterans Hall of Fame

Gary Newman, a past president of the Vietnam Veterans of America William G. Byrns Chapter 1059 in Clay County, Florida, was inducted into the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame on Dec. 4 at the State Capitol in Tallahassee. “I am very humbled and honored to receive an award of this caliber,’’ Newman told News 4 Jacksonville.

As an advisor to incarcerated chapter members at Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Newman was instrumental in getting the chapter chartered. He is second vice president of VVA’s Florida State Council, as well as president of the VVA Florida State Council Foundation, a group dedicated to support veterans.

“Gary has been the voice and advocate of all veterans, regardless of location,’’ said V. Paul Haws Jr., Chapter 1059 treasurer. “I can say with unqualified certainly that in my four decades of naval service, I have met few men or women who would equal Gary’s resolve and strong, effective leadership.’’

Newman remains passionate about helping veterans. “I have spent six decades serving my neighborhood, county and country in one way or another,” Newman said. “I enjoy helping those veterans who have been forgotten over time. I am inspired by the look in their eyes when you reach out to offer a hand up, not a handout.”
