Vietnam Veterans of America Greater Metro Atlanta Chapter 1118 invited the city of Atlanta, government workers, families and friends of all veterans to an Independence Day Tribute on July 2. Entitled “My America,” the ceremony featured a welcome from Georgia State Rep. Billy Mitchell, remarks from Georgia Department of Veterans Service Commissioner Mike Roby, lunch and musical performances.
The event also supported the establishment of a “Sons of Atlanta” Vietnam War Memorial, which would be the first to specifically honor the 208 area service members who lost their lives the Vietnam War. In January, Councilman Michael J. Bond and the Atlanta City Council adopted a resolution to partner with Chapter 1118 and Commander Eldson J. McGhee to establish the memorial with the support of the Atlanta Commission on Veterans Affairs.
