Chapter 1001 Participates in Pearl Harbor Day

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1001 in New Iberia, La., helped commemorate Pearl Harbor Day on Dec. 7 at the Steamboat Warehouse Pavilion. Former New Iberia Councilman David Merrill, a U.S. Navy veteran, emceed the event, which was co-sponsored by the American Legion Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Maj. James Grace; and the Disabled American Veterans.

In total, 2,335 American servicemen were killed and 1,143 were wounded in the Japanese surprise attack on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941. The Iberia Honor Guard fired a three-volley salute, and a commemorative wreath was laid. “We are here to remember the men who lost their lives that day serving our country,” Merrill said.
