Chapter 989 Sponsors Remembrance Event

Vietnam Veterans of America Sierra Nevada Chapter 989 and the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS) sponsored a Vietnam War Veterans Remembrance Event and All Veterans Luncheon last month in honor of National Vietnam War Veterans Day, March 29.

The first of its kind for Reno, the event offered a belated welcome home to veterans who served and faced anger, disrespect and dishonor upon returning home. A free open house featured displays of military equipment, assistance to veterans needing to file benefits paperwork, claims processing and more.

A military ceremony honored Nevada’s fallen and the 58,318 Americans who died during the Vietnam War. Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Robert Hayes, who served in Vietnam as an Army helicopter pilot and later as commander of the Army Guard for Nevada, keynoted the luncheon, and U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) and NVDS Director Kat Miller also spoke.
