Vietnam Veterans of America Big Bend Chapter 96 gifted Christmas trees to 18 veterans at the Bay County Veteran Center in December. Based in Tallahassee, the chapter also gave veterans money left over from the nonprofit’s Hurricane Michael disaster relief fund.
“It’s helpful because it gets you that one extra gift or that extra plate of food on the table for the holidays,” veteran Alex Burnhisel told WJHG-TV. “I didn’t know if I was going to put up a Christmas tree this year until they asked me if I wanted one. It really put me in the Christmas spirit.”
“They’re my brothers and sisters, and I know if the tables were turned, they’d be helping me,” said Joe West, chapter president.
