Vietnam Veterans of America Utica Chapter 944 held its eighth annual Patriot 10K/5K Run/Walk June 8 in Rome, N.Y. Honoring a different service member every year, this year’s event was held in memory of Army Cpl. John P. Sigsbee of Waterville, N.Y., who was killed in action in Iraq on Jan. 16, 2008 at age 21.
“Their families gave the ultimate sacrifice along with the soldier, and their main concern is that they never want to have their son, in this case, forgotten,” chapter president Thomas Buono told News Channel 2.
The event featured a 5K run/walk, a 10K run and a wheelchair race, plus a 10K run to the grave of Pledge of Allegiance author and Rome native Francis Bellamy. An awards ceremony following the race recognized the top three finishers in male and female categories for eight age groups.
