Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 67 provided an honor guard and played Taps to conclude the Delaware County, Pa., Veterans Day parade on Nov. 12. Hundreds attended the hour-long parade — the county’s 95th — in downtown Media.
World War II veteran Eugene Vickers celebrated his 103rd birthday at the parade, alongside fellow WWII vets Angelo Marsella, Bill Fili and Phyllis Stevick. Joe Dimond, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq, served as Grand Marshal.
Dimond spoke about the issue of veteran suicide. Now occurring at a rate of 20 per day, half of veteran suicides are Vietnam veterans. Dimond thanked those in attendance for supporting veterans and called on younger veterans to help Vietnam vets confront issues they may have repressed since the war.
