Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 452 member Joe Ferrara joined Roosevelt Elementary School’s Veterans Day event in Plainfield. N.J., on Nov. 4 to collect letters to active-duty troops from students. Held annually, the event features schoolchildren’s choral performance of patriotic songs to honor local veterans.
“I’m a member of Operation Jersey Cares, which sends out goods and packages to troops overseas at no cost to anybody except ourselves,” Ferrara said. “This year, we sent over a million pounds of goods to our troops overseas. Volunteers help pack up packages and they get shipped overseas. They go everywhere — wherever our troops may be overseas, the packages get to them.”
Children performed “America,” “America the Beautiful,” “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,” “Over There,” and a number of other songs. Veterans were impressed. “This is my first time here, and it was great,” Vietnam veteran Lee Hendrickson told TAP Into South Plainfield. “I’m very much impressed by these kids. They are a great bunch of kids.”
