Vietnam Veterans of America Thomas J. Tori Chapter 421 led a memorial event in June that drew hundreds of area residents to West Brighton, N.Y.’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park. The event paid respects to 85 Staten Islanders who sacrificed their lives during the Vietnam War.
“The importance [of the event] to us and the families is they can never be forgotten,” Gene DiGiacomo, chapter president, told silive.com. “They did the ultimate sacrifice, so as time goes on that seems to fade, especially with the Vietnam War. Since they’re our brothers, it’s our job to make sure they’re not forgotten.”
Family members of the soldiers placed white flowers on a wall bearing the names of their loved ones. VVA Chapter 421 then read aloud each of the 85 names, the date they died and their age.
