Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 358 provided a color guard at an Oct. 9 ceremony welcoming area veterans who have taken Honor Flights home. The Honor Flights serve the southern New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, region, and take veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit war memorials.

Participating veterans get a police escort on the way to their flights out of the El Paso airport, and once they arrive in Washington, D.C. “It makes veterans feel special and honors them,” organizer Elaine Prickett told the Grant County Beat. “People come up to them everywhere along the way.”

“Fifty years ago, we took a breath and held it until this flight,” said Vietnam veteran William Hart. “I was a crew chief on a Huey helicopter. I saw guys on that wall that I let out of a helicopter and they didn’t come home. The healing of this experience is beyond words.”
