Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 274 member Tracy Heath was among the many veterans honored by Cheboygan County, Mich., schools on Veterans Day. County Sheriff Dale Clarmont and several active-duty U.S. Coast Guard officials were also in attendance.
Cheboygan Area High School, Cornerstone Christian School and Wolverine Community Schools held observances simultaneously on Nov. 12. At the high school, students read speeches in honor of Veterans Day, and Jonathon Schneider, a recent graduate who serves in the U.S. Marine Corps, played Taps.
Wolverine Community School hosted a veterans appreciation breakfast featuring French toast, scrambled eggs, sausage, muffins, yogurt, fruit, coffee and juice. Local veterans shared stories of their time in the service with fifth-grade classrooms.
Wolverine Community Schools Superintendent Stephen Seelye thanked the veterans for participating in the school’s educational programming. “To watch [students] go through from fifth grade to graduation, then beyond — that’s not possible unless we have a free country that you fought for and made for us, so I thank you.”
