Vietnam Veterans of America’s Cheboygan (Mich.) Chapter 274 was presented with a flag Thursday afternoon from the Ice Breaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum as part of its Fly a Flag program.
The Fly a Flag program flies the the national ensign of the ship for the day in honor of a person or event, then sends them the flag with a certificate and a photo. The museum does 40-50 Fly a Flag events per year.
Navy Vietnam veteran Roy Brewer asked to have the flag flown at the museum and given to the local chapter of the VVA. Chapter President Neil Hartwick and Vice President Richard “Duke” Mayo accepted the flag Oct. 5.
“I think it was great that he chose to honor our local chapter of the Vietnam veterans,” Lisa Pallagi, executive director of the Ice Breaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum, told the Cheboygan Daily Tribune. “It’s kind of like a great organization and a historic vessel, all in the same neighborhood.”
