Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 236 of Janesville, Wis., led a ceremony in West Dundee, Ill., introducing The Wall That Heals for viewing on Independence Day. The mobile, three-quarter-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial attracted hundreds of veterans and other onlookers over the four-day weekend.

Medal of Honor recipient Allen Lynch of Gurnee, Ill., spoke. “We were an embarrassment to the older veterans,” he said. But “we vowed one generation of veterans would never forget another.”

Wreaths were placed for Illinoisans who died in Vietnam, including Marine Capt. Donald Koelper and Marine Cpl. Roger Lee Wilson. The ceremony also recognized POW/MIAs with a symbolic table setting. “Please don’t let them ever be forgotten,” said Chapter 236 member Albert Pacheco.
