Chapter 1078 Member Featured in Gallery Show

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1078 member Joe Spencer was Artist of the Month at Rogersville, Tenn.’s Local Artists’ Gallery’s in February. An accomplished photographer, Spencer enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam in 1965–196, then traveled the United States for several years before reenlisting for a long career in the military.

“Because of the small amount of time I spent in Vietnam, my outlook on life had changed,” he told the Rogersville Review. “I spent the next six-and-a-half years traveling and living in different parts of the country. It was in Louisiana that I realized that I needed something more in life, and unfortunately, the only I knew was being a soldier. I needed a skill and a feeling of purpose, so I reenlisted in the Army.”

Stationed in South Korea in the 1970s, he met his future wife and took up photography. He has since photographed Europe, the American West and Appalachia extensively. “In 2015, I decided to go back to Vietnam with my local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America; this trip was not only to visit a beautiful country, but I was also able to take in the sights, smells and sounds of the country — and this time they weren’t shooting at me,” he said.
