In honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1051 President David Cowherd read the names of each of 14 Kentuckians who fought in Vietnam and did not return at a ceremony in Elizabethtown on Sept. 20. A total of 1,587 Americans are missing and unaccounted-for from the Vietnam War.

The ceremony spotlighted U.S. Army Lt. John Douglas Hale, whose helicopter was shot down in 1971. Brandenburg Mayor Ronnie Joyner released a statement reflecting on Hale’s life and service, calling him “a special person.” The event also included a folding of a POW/MIA flag and a wreath-laying ceremony.

“I can’t imagine what it would be like to be a family member or a friend of someone and you don’t know where they’re at and you don’t know what’s happened,” Cowherd said at the ceremony.
