Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1036 hosted U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. (Ret.) Barry Bridger for a firsthand account of his harrowing experiences at the notorious Hanoi Hilton in Vietnam. Bridger recalled his experiences for dozens of VVA members assembled in Lake Miona Recreation Center in The Villages, Fla., Jan 7.
Bridger flew nighttime missions over North Vietnam, intercepting convoys of men and munitions moving south to attack American forces in an F4 Phantom jet. His plane was shot down Jan. 23, 1967 by a surface-to-air missile over Son Tay, and Bridger was imprisoned for more than six years.
Bridger is writing a book about the experience. “It was a tremendous story and so inspirational,” chapter member Nathan Pratt told The Villages Daily Sun. “I was very impressed with his attitude after suffering so badly for six years. I look forward to reading his book.”
