Vietnam Veterans of America Cumming (Ga.) Chapter 1030 announced its fifth annual college scholarship program for graduating seniors of Forsyth County high schools in December. Scholarships are open to any senior who has a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who served.
The chapter will award five $1,500 scholarships this year, the most ever awarded in the five years it has offered the program. Four will be available to public and private high school students, and the fifth is open only to graduating seniors participating in the North Forsyth High School JROTC.
“This will direct one of our scholarships to the students who participate in JROTC, many of whom are contemplating military service in the future,” chapter president Gary Goyette told Patch.com.
The application deadline is April 15, and scholarships will be awarded in May. Applicants will be judged on scholastic excellence, community and school activities, and a 500-word essay with the subject “Why Freedom Isn’t Free.”
