Chapter 77’s KIA Roadmarch Carried a Twist for Participants

Food Donation

More than 400 runners hit the pavement Saturday for the Fourth Annual K.I.A. Memorial Roadmarch in Orchard Park, NY .

Runners and walkers remembered military members from New York State killed in action since September 11, 2011.

The challenging 10K race is unique because runners carry backpacks full of canned goods to benefit local food banks.

As part of the race runners took on another challenge and participated in a relay where teammates had to carry each other on their backs.

“They gotta carry kangas that we donate to the food pantry, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 77 , and the Gold Star Mothers Pantry. It’s for all 320 fallen from New York State, ” said race organizer Jason Jaskula.

“It’s camaraderie, it’s team building, it’s fun to come out here and just push yourself to the limit. The proceeds stay local and people know it and and people come out and push themselves.

Organizers say the event keeps growing every year. At least 30, 000 pounds of food was donated at this year’s event.
