Chapter 1054 Rallies for Veterans Cemetery

Graveside farewell

Chapter 1054 has been pressing the Watertown City Council for a state veteran’s cemetery near the current Veterans Memorial in Watertown, SD .

There are currently other cemeteries serving veterans in other locales throughout South Dakota, but Chapter 1054 wants a state cemetery close to where they live and their surviving families live.

Chapter 1054 representative and former city councilman Dennis Solberg estimates that the cemetery could fit approximately 60, 000 graves.

As a state cemetery, veterans would be buried free of charge. There would also be space for their immediate family.

Watertown veterans also emphasized the increased economic development potential from a new cemetery. They envision holding memorial services for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, etc. at the locale.

The project has the support of Mayor Steve Thorson on behalf of the City of Watertown.

If approved, the construction could begin as soon as spring of 2017.
