Vietnam Special Flight, Inc. by Ron Miller | Books in Review

Ron Miller has worked with many nationally known politicians and celebrities during his long military and civilian careers. Miller, who served three tours as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War, offers his perspectives on a good number of those prominent persons in Vietnam Special Flight, Inc . (Merriam Press, 156 pp., $34.95, paper).

The list includes Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush; Vice President Dick Cheney; entertainers Bob Hope, Jeff Foxworthy, and Lee Greenwood; Senators John McCain and Bob Dole; and General William Westmoreland—all of whom Miller admires greatly.

Westmoreland, Miller writes, “was cut from old cloth, he was an extremely honest, courteous and patriotic individual who loved his wife, his country and his family. He was an Eagle Scout, a fact that he was very proud of. He was a great leader, a tremendous supportor of the Military and Veterans. I am very proud and humbled to call him my friend.”

The book’s title refers to a chartered flight that Miller organized in November of 1982 that brought 300 fellow Vietnam veterans from Atlanta to Washington, D.C., for the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

After a twenty-year Army career, Miller ran the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program in Georgia during the Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations. Today he serves on the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Advisory Committee on Veterans Business Affairs and as the National Veteran Adviser for the National League of Families POW-MIA’s of Southeast Asia.
