In 1972, the jazz trumpeter and composer Hannibal Lokumbe was so taken with the famed “The Girl in the Photograph” image of nine-year-old Kim Phuc naked and fleeing a napalm attack in South Vietnam that he wrote an orchestral suite called “Children of Fire” in her honor. On December 9, 2019, Lokumbe led a performance of the work at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral. Kim Phuc, who is now 55 and a physician and peace activist who lives in Canada, attended the performance.
