Researcher Query: The Things We Ate

Aqsa Bashir, a researcher and Ph.D. student at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, is working on her dissertation on developing a cancer awareness campaign focused on Vietnam War veterans, particularly those of us who were exposed to, or have been treated for, liver fluke (flatworms) which has been linked to bile duct cancer.

“As an introduction to support my research study, I need to set a scene of the lifestyle the veterans lived when they served,” Bashir told us. “I am looking for more [information on] what they ate, how they ate, their sanitary conditions, and water purification (or lack thereof).”

If you’d like to help, send an email to emailaqsabash@ufl.edu and please mention you read about her work on The VVA Veteran‘s Arts of War on the web page.

The Veteran has run two recent articles on Vietnam War veterans and the liver fluke. You can find them online at vvaveteran.org/37-1/37-1  and vvaveteran.org/34-2/34-2
