Peter C. Rollins , who recently retired as an English prof at Oklahoma State University, where he is Regents Professor Emeritus, has long specialized in film studies. Rollins, a U.S. Marine Vietnam War veteran who holds a PhD from Harvard University, is the former Editor-in-Chief of Film & History: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Film and Television Studies . He is the author of, among other books, The Columbia University Press Companion to American History on Film (2004).
Rollins recently appeared on the “Under Surveillance, ” radio show hosted by Kevin Fullam on WLUW FM, Chicago. During their half-hour discussion Fullam and Rollins talked about some of the issues in Rollins’ recently published book, Why We Fought: Americas’ Wars in Film and History (University Press of Kentucky), which he co-edited with John E. O’Connor. The book contains 27 essays plus a filmography, and examines how Hollywood has treated America’s wars from the Revolution to the present war in Iraq.
“Kevin did a good job of contributing his own ideas, which made for a more interesting program, ” Robbins told me. “I hope people enjoy this effort in skimming over the many topics of Why We Fought . The book could be the basis for ordering films from Netflix or some other film source.”
