Chapter 154 Stages Valentines for Veterans

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154 helped local students and staff at Glen Peters School in Macomb, Mich., stage its sixth annual Valentines for Veterans program. Students in the township made more than 900 valentines for patients at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit.

Members of the chapter’s honor guard were on hand for the ceremony, which began with a march through the school. “It’s an honor for us to be here,” commander Mike Miski told C&G Newspapers. “People don’t understand what this school is all about. When you come here, it’s an eye-opener for everybody.”

Glen Peters School is one of two programs in the Macomb Intermediate School District serving students with cognitive impairments. Glen Peters student Branden Karpinen, 18, sang the national anthem and said he feels good about the veterans’ visit. “I really appreciate these guys coming out and protecting our country,” he said.
