Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 71 member Nick Ullrich took home a Heart of Gold Award last month at a donor appreciation event held by the Dearborn (Ind.) Community Foundation in October.
DCF honored five community volunteers in all, recognizing them for touching others’ hearts through their volunteerism and kindness. “These honorees deserve this recognition for making a difference in our community in their own unique ways,” said Fred McCarter, DCF’s executive director. “They are role models for how all of us can have a positive impact on others.”
Ullrich was born and raised in Dearborn County and served as a sergeant with the 196th and 199th Light Infantry Brigades in Vietnam. He was awarded several medals during his service, including the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
In addition to VVA Chapter 71, Ullrich is active in American Legion Post 231, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5312 and Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 75.
