The Vietnam Veterans of America Utica Chapter 944 hosted a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of National Gold Star Mothers’ Day on Sept. 29 at the Gold Star Mothers’ Monument in Utica, N.Y. The short ceremony featured the presentation of the colors, the National Anthem and guest speakers.
American Gold Star Mothers Inc. was formed after World War I to support mothers who lost sons or daughters in the war. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in the window of their homes, carrying a gold star for each family member who died in the service.
