Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 131 and the Berks County (Pa.) Forget-Me-Nots sponsored a candlelight vigil in observance of National POW-MIA Recognition Day Sept. 20. About 200 people attended the event, held at the Berks County Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The names of 62 Berks County service members who died in Vietnam were read aloud. Wreaths of roses were laid for three natives who remain classified POW/MIA: Lt. Col. Ralph Angstadt, Col. Thomas Dugan, and Capt. David Pannebecker.

“I knew a lot of guys whose names are on that memorial,” Vietnam veteran Alfred Gaucker told the Reading Eagle.

The event also included an Agent Orange remembrance service. “Since the war ended, thousands more have died from sickness and disease related to exposure to Agent Orange,” noted Chapter 131 President Bernie Bingham.
