Chapter 278 Takes First Prize in Chili Cookoff

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 278 took first place among civic contestants in the 20th annual Texarkana (Texas) Area Veterans Council Chili Cook-Off fundraiser on Feb. 15. The event attracted more than 450 people to sample various chili recipes and raised more than $1,000.

The funds will help the council replace its transport vans, which it uses to take disabled military veterans to the Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Medical Center 70 mile away in Shreveport, La., each week. Many cookout sponsors participate in the cookout every year.

“Helping support the Veterans Council by helping them raise money is something we have loved participating in for all 10 years and we look forward to more years,” Monica Beeman, a representative of sponsor Dierksen Hospice, told the Texarkana Gazette.
