Last February in Brockton, Massachusetts, it was snowing
and the roads were slick. But pool and billiard fans still
showed up for a special dedication and to support the veterans
at the Brockton Veterans Hospital.
Those participating in
the billiards room dedication at the hospital included VA
Director Mike Lawson; Assistant VA Director Susan MacKenzie;
Chief of Voluntary and Recreation Services Ralph Marche;
Project Coordinators and Recreation Specialist Rick Leeman
and Owen “Mickey” Emery of Rhode
Island VVA Chapter 818; and Sue Doyle and Andy Segal from
Olhausen Billiards.
The event resulted from a call four years
ago by billiard promoter Matt Braun of Billiards International.
Once Braun got the ball rolling, Olhausen Billiards provided
two tables. In a 2004 raffle, one table was won by another
VSO and the other was won by Army veteran Stacy Kasten of
Colorado Springs, Colo., who donated the table back to give
to the Brockton VA Billiard Room.
Another table was donated
by Olhausen and Mike Small of Season Specialty Stores in
Foxboro, Mass., to help complete the room that was started
eleven months ago.
Emery, one of the coordinators in establishing
the room, thanked all those who had worked to put together
the Brockton VA Billiard Room, including VVA Chapter 818.
