Grisham's 'A Time to Kill' to Broadway

John Grisham’s first novel, A Time to Kill , which came out in 1989, was—no surprise—a tautly written, page-turning legal thriller. The plot: a young lawyer in Mississippi defends an African-American Vietnam veteran who may or may not have killed two men justifiably. The book became a decent Hollywood movie in 1996 with Matthew McConaughey as the lawyer and Samuel L. Jackson as the Nam vet.

And now the stage adaptation—which had its first run in 2011 at Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage—is coming to Broadway. The play, which is set to open in September, is the first adaptation of a Grisham novel for the theater. Rupert Holmes wrote the script. Ethan McSweeny will direct; the cast has yet to be announced.
