Walker, a troopship that shuttled thousands of young Americans ¯ most in their teens ¯ across the Pacific Ocean in 1966 and 1967. The exhibit will run through November 30. The canvases feature scrawled inscriptions, signatures, cartoons, and poems by young servicemen headed to combat in the Vietnam War. The young men’s graffiti was diverse and poignant in its simplicity. It included names and hometowns, dates they expected to leave the service, and day-by-day calendars to mark the voyage progress. There were messages of patriotism, politics, humor, anxiety and love. They were written for personal comfort, or to be seen by other troops who would contribute. In addition to recreating an eight-man berthing unit, the exhibit also features a cell phone-guided audio tour and a short video of archival footage of USNS Walker. The curators, Art and Lee Beltrone, will give a free lecture at the exhibit at 11:00 am on Sunday, November 11, Veterans Day, at the Navy Memorial’s Naval Heritage Center at 701 Pennsylvania Ave, NW. They will also autograph copies of their companion book Vietnam Graffiti: Messages from a Forgotten Troopship. One of the soldiers who left graffiti on the canvases, Michael Fasulo (a DC-area native), will be on hand to answer questions. This event is free and open to the public – no reservations required. |
